Shilpa Rao Concert Controversy: The 10th-anniversary celebration of Bollywood Music Project at Jio World Garden in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) has come under scrutiny following an unexpected incident during Shilpa Rao’s performance on October 24. Her set was reportedly cut short when her microphone and audio equipment were switched off midway, allegedly because the event was running behind schedule.

The incident sparked criticism from concertgoers and fans, with #JusticeForShilpaRao trending online. Several attendees also raised concerns about the event’s management and the way the situation was handled.
Shilpa Rao Concert Bollywood Music Project: Organizers Apologize After Shilpa’s Insta Post
Soon after the incident, National Award-winning singer Shilpa Rao took to Instagram last night to share an emotional note about her interrupted performance. “Mumbai, a little piece of my heart broke tonight. It hurts deeply to have something so beautiful taken away from us like this,” she wrote.
After her performance was forcefully cut short at Bollywood Music Project, #ShilpaRao allowed to say bye to fans. But even her goodbye message is cut short while Kutle Khan probably was cued to keep singing. One could see @shilparao11 feeling distraught and helpless. @bmp_live https://t.co/hMnL34k1lI

Expressing gratitude to the audience for their support, she added, “But even when the music stopped, you did not. The way you kept calling my name, the love in your voices… Our story tonight was left unfinished. I promise, I will come back.”
Following her post, the organisers of Bollywood Music Project (BMP) issued an apology over the abrupt end to Rao’s set. Acknowledging what happened, they stated, “We deeply apologise. At BMP, our mission is always to deliver an unparalleled live music experience for both our artists and their fans. We want to address the abrupt conclusion of Shilpa Rao’s performance at this weekend’s festival.”
The organisers attributed the disruption to delays in the event’s schedule, explaining, “Despite strict planning and coordination, live events can experience unpredictable operational shifts, including extended sets from earlier performances,” they said.
Clarifying why the singer could not complete her performance, BMP cited venue restrictions and local authority rules. “Because our festivals operate under strict local authority guidelines and venue curfew regulations, these compounding delays unfortunately forced a premature end to her set. While these circumstances were entirely out of our control, we deeply regret that we could not showcase her performance in its entirety.”
BMP Controversy: Did Shilpa Rao Cut Another Artist’s Performance?
Reportedly, the event was running around 45 minutes late, forcing organisers to cut down artists’ performance slots. As Shilpa Rao attempted to address the audience, express her gratitude and sign off, fellow performer Kutle Khan began his set, reportedly interrupting her farewell.
@shilparao11 maam you handled the situation so gracefully 🙏🏻 No artist deserves such disrespect. Its really sad that you had to go through all of it yet you were so calm and faced everything with a smile 🥹You are gem of a person maam ❤️ #shilparaolive #shilparao

However, speaking to News18, Kutle Khan’s manager disputed this version of events, calling it a false narrative and alleging that Rao had interrupted the folk singer’s performance instead.
“The festival team had allotted each artist 15-20 minutes onstage. But they chopped Khan saab’s performance time further. He was only given 10 minutes. But we were okay with it since they paid us. Shilpa finished her performance and left the stage. Once Khan saab began his set, she interrupted his performance and said that she would want to thank everyone.”
He further claimed that Khan had paused his performance at Rao’s request. “He stopped his performance for her. Thereafter, the festival organiser, Deepak Chaudhary, came to us and told Khan saab to sing Dil Pe Zakham Khate Hain. He kept telling him ki start karo, start karo. We should instead be upset about his performance being disrupted by Shilpa. She should’ve thanked everyone at the end of her own performance. She went backstage and then came back when Khan saab was halfway through his set,” he added.
The manager also maintained that there was no personal animosity between the two artists, while expressing displeasure over the social media controversy surrounding the incident.
“Khan saab broke for her and she even told him that he’s doing a great job. We hold no grudges against her. Artists are like one big family. Shilpa’s a good friend of us. Par pata nahi unki PR team ne kya bakwaas kiya. Everything is possible on social media these days. We can also pay a lakh and get narratives started.”
“Humein nahi karna koi pagalpan. Let them post as many things as they want on Instagram. Her management team is trying to say that Khan saab interrrupted Shilpa. It’s Shilpa, in fact, who stopped him and started her thank-you note. We simply did things as per the festival organiser because they paid us. Shilpa didn’t pay us,” he concluded.
Kutle Khan’s manager also alleged that Himesh Reshammiya’s 3-hour soundcheck contributed to the scheduling delays, forcing the organisers to reduce other artists’ performance time.
