Emmy Awards 2026: Taylor Swift did appear at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, but not from the red carpet or the audience. The singer featured in a pre-taped comedy sketch led by Mariska Hargitay, ending days of speculation around whether she would attend the ceremony in Los Angeles.

The segment played on the fan frenzy around Swift’s possible Emmys appearance. Hargitay returned as her famous Law & Order: Special Victims Unit character Olivia Benson, investigating whether the pop star would turn up at the awards. The joke landed with an extra Swift connection, as the singer famously named one of her cats Olivia Benson.
Taylor Swift Emmys cameo explains her absence
Swift’s cameo confirmed that she was part of the broadcast, even though she was not present inside the Peacock Theater. The singer had another major commitment on September 14, as she was seen at Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs’ home opener against the Denver Broncos.
Swift watched the NFL game from a suite and was also spotted speaking with actor Tom Cruise during the match. Her appearance at the stadium effectively ended any remaining hopes among fans that she might make a surprise arrival at the Emmys later in the evening.
The timing of her absence drew added attention because her Disney+ concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour The Final Show, had recently missed out at the Creative Arts Emmys. The special had received five nominations but did not win in any category.
The Eras Tour special went home without an Emmy
The Final Show was nominated for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), with Swift recognised as both a producer and performer. That award went to The Muppet Show. The concert special also lost in its other nominated categories, including technical and editing fields.
The Disney+ film captured the final night of Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour at BC Place in Vancouver on December 8, 2024. The tour became one of the biggest live music events in history, spanning five continents and drawing more than 10 million fans.
Although this year’s Emmy run ended without a win, Swift already has an Emmy to her name. Her brief appearance through the Hargitay sketch gave the ceremony a playful pop-culture moment, while making clear that her main public appearance that night was at the Chiefs game, not the awards show.
