Kareena Kapoor Khan’s upcoming collaboration under the Bhansali Productions banner is reportedly taking shape, with indication that the director’s chair has gone to Aatish Kapadia. Kapadia is widely celebrated as the writer and creator behind landmark Indian television comedies like Khichdi, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, and Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, alongside helming the 2010 theatrical release Khichdi: The Movie. If confirmed, this venture marks an unexpected creative pairing, uniting a director renowned for sharp, dialogue-driven comedy with a production studio best known for operatic grandeur, rich period aesthetics, and high emotional stakes.
While concrete plot and genre details remain under wraps, the film is expected to move into pre-production once Sanjay Leela Bhansali concludes his current directorial venture, Love & War, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal. Rather than directing the feature himself, Bhansali is backing the project as a producer, continuing his banner’s model of supporting distinct cinematic voices while retaining oversight of the final presentation.
The potential collaboration also revisits a long-anticipated professional association between Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The filmmaker had previously planned to direct her opposite Ranveer Singh in the 2013 romantic tragedy Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. Bhansali had publicly confirmed the casting to Hindustan Times at the time, stating, “We have wanted to work together for a while and I am immensely excited.” However, contractual differences and scheduling conflicts led to Kapoor Khan’s exit days before filming commenced, with the role of Leela ultimately going to Deepika Padukone.
Years after that near-miss, this new development marks a significant full-circle moment for both industry figures. While official announcements regarding the supporting cast, technical crew, and filming schedules are still awaited, Kapadia stepping in to direct Kapoor Khan under Bhansali’s production house sets up one of Hindi cinema’s most unusual and intriguing collaborations.
