First canine co-star
One of the most unusual things about Heart of the Beast is who Pitt shares the screen with. For most of the film, his closest companion is not another Hollywood star, but Odin, his loyal combat dog. We have seen Pitt in action films, comedies, dramas and, most recently, behind the wheel in F1. But Heart of the Beast puts him in a more stripped-back setting. There is no glamorous racetrack, no ensemble of famous faces, and little room for small talk. Instead, Pitt is largely on his own in the wilderness, with Odin as his primary companion. That gives the performance a physical and emotional quality. Much of what Pitt’s character feels – fear, exhaustion, determination, vulnerability, and affection – has to come through in his actions and expressions rather than dialogue.
