Led by JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley, Sweet Magnolias has officially come to an end after five seasons on Netflix. The fifth season, which premiered in June 2026, marked the final chapter of the popular series.
Developed by Sheryl J. Anderson and inspired by Sherryl Woods’ novels, the cancellation was announced through the show’s official Instagram account. The announcement came with a heartfelt message to fans that read, “All grand adventures must eventually end. And here, dear friends, is where ours does. Sweet Magnolias is now complete with five seasons streaming on Netflix.”
While Sweet Magnolias may have reached its conclusion, JoAnna Garcia Swisher and showrunner-executive producer Sheryl J. Anderson are already set to reunite for another Netflix project – Ladies of the House, a new series based on Lauren Edmondson’s novel.
Why Did Netflix Cancel Sweet Magnolias After Season 5?
Fans have been expressing their disappointment over the abrupt ending of Sweet Magnolias. On Reddit, viewers have shared their frustration, with some saying Netflix could have given the characters a proper conclusion before bringing the series to an end.
As per a Deadline report, Netflix reportedly took a “wait-and-see approach” following the premiere of Sweet Magnolias Season 5 on June 11. The season opened with 2.8 million views in its first week, marking a 30% drop compared with Season 4’s premiere-week viewership. However, the show climbed to 3.5 million views in its first full week before falling out of Netflix’s Top 10 after three weeks.
According to the portal, Netflix was reportedly deciding between renewing Sweet Magnolias for a sixth and final season and moving forward with Ladies of the House, with Sheryl J. Anderson and JoAnna Garcia Swisher attached to the new project. After the Sweet Magnolias cast options expired on September 17, Netflix chose to cancel the series after five seasons and ordered Ladies of the House instead.
