Universal Pictures India (distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery) is set to bring a terrifying new horror film Other Mommy to cinemas on 9th October 2026. From James Wan, one of modern horror’s most influential names, and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, the studio behind Backrooms and Obsession, the film is directed by breakout genre director Rob Savage. The film stars Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain in the dual roles of Bela’s mother and the sinister entity known as “Other Mommy.” Jay Duplass plays Bela’s father, Daddo, while Arabella Olivia Clark stars as Bela. The supporting cast includes Dichen Lachman as paranormal scientist Lois Anthony, Arian Moayed as family friend Uncle Frank, and Karen Allen as Bela’s grandmother Ruth, alongside Sean Kaufman, Adam Silver and Alec Secareanu.
Based on the bestselling novel by Josh Malerman, Other Mommy is a shocking new nightmare that follows the story of Bela, a young girl who forms a relationship with a sinister entity in her home that looks uncannily like her own mother. As the entity befriends Bela, she soon finds herself being hunted by the very presence that has entered her life.
When it came to creating Other Mommy, Chastain tapped into the menace and darkness needed for her transformation. “In prep, I started thinking about the reality of Other Mommy,” Chastain says. “It is trying to appear warm and gentle to Bela, but I imagined it might be painful for this entity to hold the shape of something it is not. I found this unblinking smile in the mirror, and then the tears started coming, which created this strange contrast between what Other Mommy is presenting and what is underneath.” The look was instantly unnerving. “At one point, a child came into the trailer,” Chastain says. “I made the face and he immediately screamed. Rob said, ‘That is Other Mommy.’ From there, every physical choice came from what it might feel like for this entity to present itself as everything Bela wishes her mother could be.” “What makes Other Mommy so terrifying is the idea of a parent being replaced by something sinister,” Chastain says. ” There is also this question of whether Bela is seeing Other Mommy or a darker side of Mommy, and the fact that she cannot always tell is unsettling.”
Jessica Chastain’s transformation brings the sinister presence of Other Mommy to life, adding to the film’s chilling take on a familiar face turning into something terrifying.
